Brent Shultz

Actor/Combatant // Devised Movement Artist

I am a graduate of The New School for Drama MFA Acting program in New York City. While at The New School, I worked in close collaboration with artists in stage and film creating new works; Solo Performance, Playwriting from Personal Perspective, and had the opportunity to workshop installation pieces with Parson's Communication Technology and Design students. Before that I directed the production, Children's Theatre, which went on to win a Distinguished Show Award at the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in 2007 I was awarded an Associated Student Incorporated (ASI) Grant from California University of San Bernardino to direct and self-produce Mark Ravenhill’s dark comedy, Handbag. Currently, I am a good standing member of The Association of Movement Theatre Educators (ATME) having just returned from presenting, Intimacy in a Digital Age: Removing Walls and Filters to find Authentic Self at this year’s Colloquium. In 2017, I performed Dichotomies of the Body: Spectacle and Skin, Shame and Salvation, a devised movement piece selected as part of The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) Conference’s 2017 After Dark Series at Planet Hollywood Hotel in Las Vegas. This August I will be presenting at ATHE, speaking on the panel Intimacy Direction vs Cultural Change.

I have been Fight Director for productions, Void at The Tank, Convention at Atlantic Theatre Company, Trees in Their Youth at The Signature Theater, The Found Dog Ribbon Dance at Columbia University, Deathwatch, Drunken Enough to Say I Love You and First Love all presented as part of 2019 Directorfest hosted by The Drama League, and assisted Fight Director Thomas Schall in Carnegie Hall's production of West Side Story and Zorba the Greek the Musical at New York City Center. I completed my Theatrical Intimacy Education (TIE) training in May 2018. Last Summer I had the privilege to work with students from California State University Summer Arts Program - Stage Combat for Theatre and Film Intensive. I am one of twelve participants selected for the upcoming Choreography Track as part of this year’s Summer Sling, stage combat intensive, hosted by the Society of America of American Fight Directors in New York.

Aside for my skills in storytelling I have earned my 200-hour YogaWorks Teacher Certification along with certifications in Lagree Fitness Method and ACE Personal Training. As a certified instructor serving the Greater New York Area I have built a network fostering online and personal trainer/client relationships while designing individual and group exercise formats that are both challenging and fun; safe and effective for everyone.
